Winter or Spring – what does it actually mean?
Rovaniemi is a good reference point for all of Lapland. In December there are about 2.5 hours of daylight, in January around four hours, in February about eight hours, and in March already twelve. Temperatures in deep winter are far below freezing. Snow typically lasts from November well into spring.
The Northern Lights can be seen from late August until early April, most reliably from November to March.
Prices and Tourist Numbers
December, especially Christmas and New Year, is the most expensive time. Accommodation, activities and flights reach their annual peak. Tourist numbers are also highest, particularly in and around Rovaniemi and the Santa Claus Village.
From January onwards, prices ease slightly. February and March are still popular but usually cheaper than pre-Christmas. April marks the shoulder season with lower demand, fewer crowds and better deals.
