Check the exact water before fishing
Fishing rules around Ranua depend on age, method, water and season. A national fee is not an all-purpose licence, and rules for a lake cannot simply be applied to a river. The official permit conditions take priority over a general travel article.
The national fisheries management fee
Most anglers aged 18–69 using lures must pay the fisheries management fee. People who were already 65 by the end of 2023 retain an age exemption. The national fee is €6 for a day, €16 for seven days or €47 for a year. Basic hook-and-line angling and ordinary ice fishing are generally exempt, although restricted waters and methods are exceptions.

Additional permissions
Fishing with several rods, nets or other methods may require permission from the water owner or a permit covering that particular area. Rapids and flowing sections in migratory-fish waters have special restrictions. Never infer permission from the fact that a shore is accessible.
Koirajärvi
The lake beside Mökki Tikka is convenient for a guest fishing outing. Ask us about access, equipment and the exact area you intend to fish. Pay any applicable national fee and check restrictions; staying beside a lake does not remove statutory requirements or confer unlimited fishing rights.
Simojärvi
The larger lake offers lure fishing, boat fishing and winter opportunities when conditions permit. A single rod under the general national rules and fishing with several rods are different cases. Consult Simojärvi permit area 2587 and the relevant water-owner rules before buying a permit or setting several lines.
Simojoki
The salmon river has separate permit areas and detailed conditions. Check 2580 Simojoki, Ranua or 2581 Simojoki, Simo, depending on your location. During 15 June–31 August, the weekly closure runs from Monday at 19:00 until Tuesday at 19:00. Additional species and seasonal restrictions apply.
Sizes, closures and protected fish
Do not use a single generic species table as permission to retain fish. Trout rules depend on the population and other conditions; grayling, salmon and whitefish have specific restrictions in relevant waters. Read the current local conditions and identify the fish before keeping it. A protected or undersized fish must be released even if injured.
Fish responsibly
- Handle fish carefully and avoid unnecessary time out of water.
- Keep only fish permitted by the rules and intended for use.
- Consider releasing large breeding pike.
- Take litter away and ask how to dispose of fish remains locally.
- Respect other anglers, private shores and wildlife.
