Hiking in Finnish forests: preparation and respect for nature

Hiking in Finnish forests: preparation and respect for nature

Prepare your navigation

Not every route in Lapland is continuously marked. Away from popular trails, good orientation is essential. Carry a paper map or a downloaded offline map, and know how to use it. A GPS or walking app can help, but keep a power bank and do not make a phone your only plan.

Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. If you are inexperienced, choose a marked route, go with a companion or arrange a guide.

Pack for the terrain and weather

Forest ground can be uneven, soft or boggy. Rain and cool wind are possible even in summer. Useful items include:

  • Waterproof footwear appropriate to the route.
  • Mosquito protection, such as repellent or a head net.
  • A rain jacket, adjustable layers and dry spare clothing.
  • Enough drinking water; do not assume clear stream water is safe without suitable treatment.
  • Food, a warm drink and basic emergency supplies.

Do not depend on finding a staffed hut or food service along the way.

What makes these walks different?

Routes may cross wetlands, open woodland and small lake shores. You can travel a long way without meeting anyone, although animal tracks may show that you are not alone. Rest areas sometimes have maintained fireplaces and firewood.

Use fires only where permitted and when current restrictions allow. Everyman's rights do not grant unrestricted fire-making rights, and nature reserves may have their own access or camping rules. Respect homes, wildlife and other visitors.

Choose a realistic route

Distance alone does not describe the difficulty of a walk. Allow for wet ground, limited daylight and changing weather. Start early enough, leave time to turn back and enjoy the quiet at a pace that suits you.
