Choose the season for your plans

Late summer to early spring offers dark hours for northern-light watching. You still need suitable activity and a clear sky; no date guarantees a sighting. Winter can bring temperatures below −30 °C, while spring offers rapidly increasing daylight.

Autumn brings ruska colours and summer brings open water and long, bright evenings. Ranua lies south of the Arctic Circle: its summer nights remain very light, but the sun does not stay above the horizon all night.

Arriving at Mökki Tikka

Rovaniemi is a practical airport for the lodge. Connections via Helsinki and seasonal international flights depend on the timetable. Reserve a rental car or transfer in advance and allow extra time for winter conditions.

Winter clothing

A suitable base layer, insulation and wind protection are the starting point. Add warm boots, mittens, a hat and a headlamp. Winter clothing sets may be available locally; ask early about sizes and reservations.

Juha's activities: use the current offer

Some experiences can start at Mökki Tikka by arrangement. Confirm the meeting point, transfers and details with Juha or Alexandra. The earlier prices and inclusion lists in this article have been replaced for booking purposes by the current activity pages and flyers.

Guided snowmobile tours: ask about route, duration, vehicle occupancy and optional additions.
Snowmobile rental: confirm driving requirements, equipment, fuel and delivery or collection.
ATV rental: collection and return are at Juha's farm, rather than automatically at the lodge.
Wilderness drop-off: confirm transfers, location, equipment and food.
Private ice fishing: ask about transport, fishing gear, clothing and the group price.
Traditional net fishing: a guided seasonal experience with its own arrangements.
Junior snowmobiling: confirm supervision, ages and participation requirements.
Private sledding: ask about the location, equipment and conditions.

At the lodge

Sauna, hot tub and time by the lake form part of the stay according to the house arrangements. Ask about the canoe, snowshoes and fishing gear available. Equipment availability does not remove the need for suitable conditions or fishing permission.

Huskys: local options include O’Nordic in Posio; check current tours and conditions.
Reindeer: use Pikkuaho Reindeer Farm for visits and seasonal experiences.
Ranua Wildlife Park: check current opening hours and admission.
Korouoma: choose an appropriate route and check winter trail conditions.
A private Santa visit: available only by arrangement and subject to confirmation.

Summer, autumn and spring

Open-water fishing and canoeing suit the warmer season when conditions allow. Later summer brings berries, September often brings autumn colour, and birdwatching changes through the year. Snowshoeing needs suitable snow and should not be assumed throughout spring.

Travel with consideration

Support local providers where useful, combine necessary journeys and respect wildlife, fire restrictions and marked routes. A small accommodation or a higher price does not by itself prove that a whole journey is sustainable. Transport and daily choices also matter.

Budgeting

The old guide used examples of €250–500 for return flights, car rental from about €400 per week, activities at €50–400 and accommodation from €190 per night. These are historical planning figures, not current quotations. Dates, group size and inclusions can change the total substantially.

Obtain current offers for travel, accommodation and activities. Remember fuel, insurance extras, meals and clothing rental. A cottage kitchen and unhurried days at the lake provide alternatives to booking a paid excursion every day.

A practical evening routine

Check local cloud cover and aurora observations, then look outside periodically when it is dark. Keep warm clothing ready and take breaks indoors. Do not step onto uncertain ice for a photograph.
