More than a place to sleep
A journey to the North Cape can involve long days in a car, camper, motorhome or on a motorcycle. After many kilometres, a quiet place to pause can be as valuable as another landmark. Impiö, in the municipality of Ranua in southern Lapland, offers forest, wetlands, lakes and everyday village life.
It is a deliberate detour from the busiest through-routes, rather than a roadside stop you will automatically pass. Consider it if you want to slow down during the journey north or on the way home.
The essentials
- A rural village in the Ranua area, surrounded by lakes and forest.
- A quieter alternative to a busy tourist stop.
- Accommodation options include Mattilan Talo B&B and Mökki Tikka beside Koirajärvi.
- Summer possibilities include rowing, canoeing, fishing, swimming and bright evenings.
- Winter brings opportunities for skiing, snowshoeing and, in safe conditions, ice fishing.
- Plan groceries, fuel and other errands in Ranua.
A village, not a visitor display
People live and work in Impiö. Houses, forest work and seasonal routines are part of the place. Reindeer beside a road or birds over the water are not scheduled attractions. Visitors are welcome when they respect private property, local work and the village's quiet character.
Camper and motorhome visitors
Impiö is not a large campsite with rows of pitches. An open patch of land, forest road, driveway or lakeshore is not automatically a public overnight parking place. Use explicitly offered or permitted arrangements and ask before entering private ground. We can discuss suitable options.
One night or a proper break?
A single overnight stay can divide a long drive, but it leaves little time to get to know the area. Two nights give you a complete day without moving on. Three to five nights allow a more substantial rest, with time for the lake, sauna and changing weather.
Accommodation minimum stays still apply. For Mökki Tikka, the normal direct-booking minimum is three nights; any exception for a travelling group must be arranged with us.
Mattilan Talo B&B
Mattilan Talo is a historic house in the village, suited to travellers looking for a personal bed-and-breakfast stay. It can be an option for individuals, couples and motorcyclists who want to spend a night or a short visit in an older Finnish home.
The source describes breakfast, a traditional sauna and proximity to Impiöjärvi. Confirm the current room, facilities and arrangements directly when booking.
Mökki Tikka beside Koirajärvi
For a longer pause, our log house stands on a quiet peninsula of about 12,000 m² without immediate neighbours. It gives families, friends or a small travelling group their own place to settle.
- A separate wood-heated lakeside sauna.
- A private jetty and shore access.
- A rowing boat and canoe.
- An outdoor hot tub heated throughout the year.
- A fireplace and fully equipped kitchen.
- A covered outdoor cooking area, fireplace and barbecue facilities.
- Space to spend time outside without needing to book an outing every day.
Recommended capacity is up to ten guests in summer and eight in winter. See the house description and booking information for the arrangements that apply to your group.
Summer in Impiö
Rowing and canoeing
At Mökki Tikka, you can launch from the house's lakeside access when weather and your experience permit. Calm mornings or evenings may be particularly appealing, but use lifejackets and follow local advice.
Sauna and swimming
The wood-heated sauna is close to the water. Cooling down in fresh air is enough; swimming is optional and depends on conditions and ability.
Fishing and observing nature
The surrounding lakes and forest offer places to fish, watch birds or simply walk. Obtain any necessary permits and do not expect wildlife or a catch on demand.
A day without driving
Sleep a little longer, cook, sit by the lake or prepare the sauna. After several travelling days, not moving on can be the point of the stop.
Winter in Impiö
A local cross-country route and surrounding snowy terrain offer possibilities when maintained or safe for the intended activity. Ask about current conditions for skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing. A quiet short outing followed by the fireplace can be enough.
Shop before arrival
Ranua has supermarkets, filling stations, a pharmacy and other services. Impiö does not offer a full range of shopping. Stock up before reaching the house, checking opening hours if arriving late or on a holiday.
Who might enjoy this stop?
It suits travellers who value nature, personal hosts and an unhurried day more than continuous sightseeing. It can work on either leg of a North Cape trip, provided the detour fits your wider route.
