A moment that stayed with us

It was mid-January and −26 °C. We were driving through snowy forest in the late afternoon when three reindeer appeared on the road. They carried on at their own pace. We stopped and waited. It was a simple reminder that nature often sets the pace here.

Winter driving

Snowdrifts, slippery patches and ice are part of rural winter driving. Good tyres, visibility, a suitable speed and a generous stopping distance matter more than confidence in a large vehicle. Four-wheel drive does not shorten braking distances on ice.

Ask the rental company about winter tyres and equipment. Finnish requirements depend on season and conditions; studded tyres are one option, not a universal requirement for every rental car. Follow current official guidance and posted restrictions.

Watch for reindeer and moose, particularly in poor visibility and around dawn or dusk. Plan night drives carefully and allow for lower temperatures, wildlife and changing road conditions.

Summer and gravel roads

Long daylight does not make every road easy. Gravel routes can have loose stones, potholes or soft ground after rain. Check whether the road is suitable for your vehicle and rental agreement. Turn around before entering doubtful terrain rather than relying on ground clearance alone.

If something goes wrong

Remote recovery can be expensive. The original article mentions €300–500 as an example, but the actual charge and what you pay depend on location, provider and insurance. Check roadside-assistance coverage before setting off.

• Keep fuel or battery range comfortably above the minimum needed.
• Carry a charged phone and warm clothing.
• Know whom to call for assistance.
• Do not drive off-road on speculation.
• Turn back when conditions exceed your experience.
