Understanding Finnish habits: silence, sisu and coffee

Understanding Finnish habits: silence, sisu and coffee
In this blog

Quiet does not mean distant

Finns are often described as reserved. In our experience, silence can be a sign of respect and ease, rather than uncertainty. There is no need to fill every pause. People listen before replying, and conversations often feel considered.

Of course, everyone is different. These are impressions that have helped us feel at home in Finland.

Sisu: quiet determination

Sisu is difficult to translate into one word. It suggests inner strength, endurance and the courage to keep going when things are difficult.

It can show itself quietly: shovelling snow at −25 °C, getting through the long dark season or trusting that spring will return. There is no need to make a performance of it.

Coffee as an invitation

Coffee has an important place in everyday life. Filter coffee accompanies visits to neighbours, meetings by the lake and time after the sauna.

A cup is often an invitation to stay a little while. The coffee may come first and the conversation later. What matters is the shared moment, not just the caffeine.

To get to know Finland, we find it helps to observe and be patient: a cup in your hand, a view of the water and time for familiarity to grow.
